Fight Against Terrorism : Nigeria Salutes Joint Military Airstrikes

Thursday’s military action is part of efforts with her US partner to combat terrorism and cross-border crimes within the state.


Nigerian authorities have hailed the joint military airstrikes carried out by its military and that of the United States in the northwest of the country. Confirming the airstrike on Friday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the move as part of broader security collaboration with the United States. The Ministry said, intelligence sharing and strategic coordination between both countries had “led to precision hits on terrorist targets in Nigeria by air strikes in the North West”. It added that the ongoing security operations were aimed at strengthening public safety and ensuring the protection of lives and property across Sokoto State. Thursday’s airstrikes against Islamic State group militants (ISIS) was at the request of Nigeria’s government, U.S. President Donald Trump said on his social media page, claiming the group had been targeting Christians in the region. 
The government has disclosed that over the past two years, it had consistently supported security agencies in the fight against banditry and terrorism through the provision of equipment and other logistical assistance. Residents of affected communities were urged to cooperate with security agencies by providing timely and credible information to support ongoing efforts to restore lasting peace and security in the state.
