Empowering The Next Generation: New Master’s Degree To Tackle Child Rights In Central, East Africa

The United Nations Children’s Fund, (UNICEF) and the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF) signed the partnership deal in Yaounde on March 30, 2026.

In a move set to redefine the landscape of social protection and academic excellence in Central Africa and the Great Lakes region, the United Nations Children’s Fund, (UNICEF) Cameroon and the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF) officially signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on March 30, 2026 in Yaounde. Nadine Perrault, UNICEF Cameroon Representative and Jean-Luc Konan, AUF Regional Director for Cerntral Africa, signed for their respective organizations.

Meeting Real-world Needs
The partnership marks the launch of a pioneering Master’s degree in Child Rights, Social and Behavior Change (SBC), designed to turn academic research into life-saving professional action for millions of children. The collaboration creates a vital bridge between the ivory towers of academia and the urgent, real-world needs of vulnerable communities.
By establishing this specialized curriculum, the two institutions aim to professionalize a new generation of experts capable of designing and implementing public policies that directly address child protection, health, and education challenges. For the first time at this scale in the region, 11 partner universities will harmonize their training to ensure that the promotion of child rights is grounded in scientific rigor and behavioral data.

Practical Laboratories
For students and young professionals, the partnership offers an innovative, hybrid learning model. Students will benefit from face-to-face instruction and digital modules via AUF’s global platforms, such as MOOCs, ensuring that top-tier education is accessible even in remote areas. Crucially, the programme integrates eight existing Child Rights Centres (CRCs) as "practical laboratories". These centres allow students to move beyond textbooks, immersing themselves in community realities to tackle issues like low immunization rates, malnutrition, and the prevention of early marriage for young girls.
