From Television To Digital: Cameroon’s Top Media Outlets To Face Rigorous Ethical Audits

The project, driven by a consultancy firm in collaboration with the National Communication Council, is led by seasoned journalist, Alain Belibi. To monitor and rate 80 media outlets.

In a landmark move toward enhancing the quality and ethical standing of Cameroon’s media, Peace and Communication Consulting, in a strategic partnership with the National Communication Council, NCC, has officially transitioned its "Indice Media" evaluation tool into the implementation phase. The project, specifically designed to promote professionalism and eradicate hate speech, has released an extensive watch list of 80 media outlets - spanning television, radtio, print, and digital platforms - that will now be subject to continuous monitoring and performance rating.

Oversight Committee Set Up
The implementation phase follows a successful initial assessment period that focused primarily on the evaluation of televised debates. Under the new expanded scope, a dedicated scientific committee will oversee the rating and monitoring operations. This committee is led by seasoned journalist, Alain Belibi and comprises distinguished academics and veteran journalists, including Jean-Vincent Tchienehom, Emmanuel Gustave Samnick, Jeannine Fankam, and Tabe Tabe. Their primary mission is to compile weekly files and monthly reports based on an in-depth analysis of media content.

Responsibility, Ethical Standards
According to an official press release issued in Yaounde, the evaluation process is built upon rigorous and transparent criteria. The committee will analyze content from a wide array of platforms to ensure compliance with professional responsibility and ethical standards. Public rankings derived from these evaluations are scheduled for regular publication, with the first set of results expected to debut at the end of April 2026.

Diverse, Wide Spread
The selection of media outlets for this phase is both diverse and comprehensive, covering major formats and geographical hubs across the country. In the television sector, 18 major channels have been selected for monitoring. This list includes the state broadcaster CRTV Television alongside prominent private entities such as Canal 2 International, Équinoxe TV, Afrique Média, and Vision 4. The committee aims to ensure these high-reach platforms adhere to the requirements for preserving social peace and professional accountability.

Yaounde, Douala Hubs
Broadcasting is further represented by a heavy focus on the urban centres of Yaounde and Douala. In Yaounde, 13 radio stations, including CRTV National Station, Magic FM, and Satellite FM, will be tracked. In Douala, 10 stations such as Radio Equinoxe, Radio Balafon, and Sweet FM, have been categorized for evaluation. By monitoring these local frequencies, Indice Media seeks to address regional nuances in broadcasting and professional conduct.

35 Newspapers Included
The print media category represents the largest cohort in the project, with 35 publications under review. This includes established daily and weekly titles such as Cameroon Tribune, The Guardian Post, Mutations, Le Jour, and The Post. The evaluation will look specifically for instances of "media misconduct," a term encompassing ethical lapses and the dissemination of harmful rhetoric that could destabilize social cohesion.

Holistic View Taken
Furthermore, the project acknowledges the increasing influence of digital journalism by including several digital-first and online outlets. The list features the Cameroon News Agency (CNA), Journal du Cameroun, Bamenda Online, and Business in Cameroon, among others. This sector-wide approach ensures that the Indice Media tool provides a holistic view of the national information environment.
