The Apostolic Nunciature is where Pope Leo XIV will stay during next week’s visit to Cameroon.
As the afternoon sun beats down on the Cameroonian capital, Yaounde, this Thursday, April 9, 2026, the city is breathing with a different kind of anticipation. In exactly six days, Cameroon will make history once again, hosting its fourth official Papal visit. From April 15-18, 2026, Pope Leo XIV will grace the "Land of Promise." And while the entire nation prepares, nowhere is the intensity of these "last-minute touches" more palpable than on the winding, steep slopes of Mount Febe.
Yaounde’s Topmost Peak
Up here, on one of Yaounde’s topmost peaks, the air is thinner, the view is grander, and the security is becoming impenetrable. This is where the residence and office of the Apostolic Nuncio to Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea sits - a one-storey building that is currently being transformed into a high-security sanctuary where the Holy Father will lodge during his three-night stay.
The Ascent To The Vatican Embassy
The journey to the Nunciature is a symbolic climb. Driving up the fairly narrow tarmac road that snakes through the lush greenery of Mount Febe, the signs of an impending global event are everywhere. It is a scene of organized chaos. Workers, perched precariously on truck forklifts and armed with hacksaws, are busy trimming outstretched tree branches that hang over the road. Every stray leaf and bit of roadside litter is being cleared by hand, ensuring that the Papal motorcade has a pristine path to the summit.
Brief Stopover
Our first stop is the Mount Febe Monastery, a landmark of silence and prayer. Here, a welcoming priest serves as a guide, pointing the way further up the hill. The road continues its steep wind until we reach a small junction. "Follow that road," the priest says, gesturing toward the right. "After about 200 meters, you arrive at the gate."
A Fortress On The Hill
At the entrance of the Nunciature, the atmosphere shifts from communal welcoming to professional vigilance. The gate is manned by a civilian security guard and a policeman who, for the moment, is passing the time listening to music on his phone. However, their relaxed demeanor belies the strict protocols now in place.
Heightened Security
Explaining the mission - to see the preparations for Pope Leo XIV’s stay - is met with immediate skepticism. "Without an appointment?" the guard asks, shaking his head. The reason for their caution is clear: the building is no longer just a diplomatic residence. It has been reinforced by the elite Vatican Guards. With the Pope’s arrival less than a week away, the residence has effectively become Vatican territory under high-alert surveillance.
We are told to wait until 2:00 PM - a 35-minute countdown - for the staff to return from their break. Sitting in the veranda of the guard post, roughly 150 meters from the threshold of the lodge, we watch the physical transformation of the site.
Painting History
The building itself is a simple, old structure, partially constructed from stone. It does not boast the glass-and-steel modernism of downtown Yaounde, but it carries a quiet, historical weight. Workmen on a forklift are currently painting a portion of the back façade in a deep maroon. Others are "mopping" and scrubbing the exterior stone walls, removing years of tropical weathering to ensure the building sparkles for the Holy Father.
Last-minute Touches
In the courtyard, the flag of the Holy See flutters gently on its pole, a yellow-and-white beacon against the blue Yaounde sky. The landscaping is equally meticulous. One man is busy trimming hedges into sharp, geometric shapes, while another focuses on the perimeter wall, hacking away at climbing stems and unruly branches that had begun to clutter the compound’s initial beauty. It is a labor of love and precision; every inch of the grounds must reflect the order and sanctity of the Vatican.
