The listing places CRTV, Cameroon Tribune and Radio Balafon first respectively in the television, print and radio categories.
In a significant move toward self-regulation and professional excellence, Indice Media has published its first evaluation results for media organizations in Cameroon. The project, led by veteran journalist Joly Koum (Promoter of Peace Media and Communication) and chaired by the legendary Alain Belibi, seeks to provide a scientific and transparent benchmark for the country’s press, radio, and television sectors.
From Quantity To Quality
Launched initially in June 2025 and finalized for its first ranking cycle in early 2026, Indice Media was born out of a need to sanitize the media space. With hundreds of active outlets, "Indice Media" (IM) serves as a notation system to reward those adhering to journalism ethics.
"The goal is not to punish but to emphasize responsible practice and respect for professional codes of conduct," stated senior journalist and jury member Gemnda Buinda during the rollout.
The Inaugural Leaders
The first ranking highlights established giants and consistent performers across various categories. Based on the evaluation criteria, the leading media houses identified in this first wave include:
Television: CRTV (State Broadcaster) and Equinoxe TV emerged as top-tier performers, recognized for their technical production and program diversity.
Print Media: Cameroon Tribune (State-owned) and Mutations were cited for their editorial rigor and consistency.
Radio: Radio Balafon and CRTV National Station led the rankings, particularly in the categories of information verification and moderator professionalism.
Rigorous Evaluation Criteria
Unlike social media "popularity" polls, the Indice Media rankings are determined by a Scientific Committee of 20 experts. Including academics and veteran journalists like Alain Blaise Batongue and Albert Mbida. The evaluation is based on 11 key indicators:
Choice of subjects: Relevance and social impact.
Quality of guests and panel balance: Ensuring diverse and expert opinions.
Moderator professionalism: Tone, language, and mastery of the debate.
Ethics and standards: Verification of facts and avoidance of hate speech.
Professional image: Compliance with the "Fashion and Image" standards for on-air talent.
Impact On Media Landscape
The National Communication Council (NCC) has endorsed the tool as a "precious reference" for newsrooms. By publishing these rankings monthly/regularly, Indice Media hopes to encourage fact-checking and source verification, prepare media houses for responsible reporting during the upcoming 2025/2026 electoral cycles. And move away from sensationalism toward educational and constructive journalism.
Looking Ahead
Moving forward, the committee plans to expand its monitoring to online media and influencers who play a major role in the information ecosystem. The results of the Indice Media ranking will serve as a guide for both advertisers looking for credible platforms and the public seeking reliable information.
The inaugural Indice Media rankings for Cameroonian media organizations provide a clear picture of the landscape based on evaluations by the 20-member Scientific Committee.
