The family of the late former Speaker of the National Assembly, Right Honourable Fonka Shang Lawrence, has officially extended its heartfelt condolences to the family of the recently deceased former Speaker, Right Honourable Cavaye Yeguie Djibril.
The message, dated May 22, 2026, was dispatched from Yaoundé by Barrister Fonka M. Tomnyuy, acting as the legal and formal representative of the Fonka Shang Lawrence family.
In the statement, the Fonka family expressed "deep sorrow" upon learning of the passing of Cavaye Yeguie Djibril, who succeeded their late patriarch at the helm of Cameroon's National Assembly in 1992. The family conveyed its solidarity not only to the biological family of the deceased, but also to the National Assembly, his close aides, and the nation at large.
The condolence message highlighted the unique historical transition between the two statesmen, noting that as successor to Fonka Shang Lawrence, Cavaye Yeguie Djibril played a "historic role in the consolidation of parliamentary life and the preservation of republican institutions over many decades."
The family concluded the missive with a prayer for national cohesion and eternal peace. Stating that Cavaye’s dedication to public duty would remain forever engraved in the political history of Cameroon.
To fully comprehend why this condolence message has resonated so deeply within the political corridors of Yaoundé, one must journey back into the archives of 1992. A watershed year that fundamentally reshaped the legislative governance of the Republic of Cameroon.
During the late 1980s, the Right Honourable Fonka Shang Lawrence, an eminent Anglophone statesman from Nso in Bui Division of the North West Region, presided over the National Assembly. Taking office in 1988 as the third Speaker of the House since independence, Fonka Shang navigated the legislature through an incredibly turbulent, highly volatile period of political transformation.
It was during his tenure that Cameroon underwent its painful, historic transition from a one-party state under the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement, CPDM into a newly born, highly contested multi-party democratic framework. Fonka Shang managed this transition with a quiet administrative dignity that earned him cross-partisan respect. Bridging the gap between old-guard centralized governance and the loud demands of early 1990s pluralism.
However, the landmark legislative elections of March 1, 1992, permanently altered the landscape. While Fonka Shang’s speakership ended with the seating of the new multiparty parliament, a dynamic, fiercely loyal statesman from the Far North Region stepped forward to claim the gavel: Cavaye Yeguie Djibril.
On March 31, 1992, Cavaye officially took over from Fonka Shang Lawrence as the Speaker of the National Assembly. This handover was not merely a transition between two men; it was a profound geopolitical shift within Cameroon's intricate system of regional, linguistic, and ethnic balances.
The speakership moved from the English-speaking Grassfields of the North West Region to the French-speaking, highly strategic northern Sudano-Sahelian plains of Mayo-Sava Division in the Far North Region. Cavaye took the seat that Fonka Shang had warm, and he would proceed to hold it for more than three decades. Until March 17, 2026 when Cavaye ceded the position to Right Hon. Theodore Datouo. The Right Honourable Cavaye Yeguie Djibril died on May 6, 2026 at the age of 86 years.
