Personal Injury Compensation: Call for Major Reforms

The landscape of personal injury compensation in Cameroon could soon undergo a significant transformation as the Association for the Study of Personal Injury Compensation in Cameroon (AREDOCAM) intensifies efforts to professionalize and standardize compensation practices across the country. For years, victims of road traffic accidents, medical malpractice, and workplace injuries have grappled with a compensation system characterized by legal uncertainty, inconsistent assessment methods, and lengthy processing delays. AREDOCAM, a young but ambitious organization founded in July 2025, believes these challenges can be addressed through a scientific and harmonized approach to personal injury evaluation. Speaking during a press briefing held in Douala on June 5, 2026, the association's Executive Board, led by President Dr. Patricia Kom, outlined its vision for reforming the sector. The organization aims to become a leading technical and scientific reference in personal injury compensation, not only in Cameroon but across the CIMA (Inter-African Conference of Insurance Markets) zone. According to AREDOCAM, the absence of standardized assessment tools and methodologies has created significant disparities in compensation awards, affecting victims, insurance companies, medical experts, and judicial authorities alike. The association argues that this fragmented system undermines fairness and weakens public confidence in compensation mechanisms. To address these shortcomings, AREDOCAM is promoting a transdisciplinary model that brings together forensic physicians, court-appointed experts, lawyers, judges, and insurance professionals. By fostering collaboration between medical science and legal practice, the organization seeks to transform injury compensation from what it describes as an often empirical process into a rigorous, evidence-based discipline.
