The Shell Alchemist Of Yaounde: Cago Francis Reimagines Ancient Warrior Armor for Modern Fashion

The exhibitor at the ongoing Promote trade fair in the Yaounde Conference Centre has on display dagger-proof chest vest and a polished 250,000 FCFA palm kernel necklace. To pick up!

Amid the bustling pavilions of the Promote international trade fair at the Yaoundé Conference Centre - running from June 12-21, 2026 - one stand offers an unexpected collision of ancient heritage, eco-luxury, and wellness.

Not Your Average Artisan
At the center of it all is Mr. Cago Francis, widely known by his brand name, Coco Design. Resident after the Simbock Military Base in the Eboundoum neighborhood of Yaoundé, Francis is not your average artisan. He is a shell alchemist, specializing in a craft that is decidedly out of the ordinary. Transforming discarded coconut and palm kernel shells into high-end fashion, contemporary art, and therapeutic accessories.

Spear-Proof Armor Meets Modern Wellness
Walking into the Coco Design exhibition space, visitors are greeted by a striking array of bags, shoes, bracelets, necklaces, and timepieces. But it is the structured chest vest Francis wears that commands immediate attention. Resembling a piece of organic tactical gear, the garment is meticulously crafted to be entirely spear -and sword-proof.
Inspired by the defensive garments of ancient African warriors, the vest relies on the natural resilience of its materials. Because the coconut shells are heavily polished until they are completely smooth, weapons lose their piercing upon impact.

Impenetrable
"When you watch old movies, you see that warriors used similar outfits to prevent wounds," Francis explains. "Because the shells are smooth and slippery, a sword or spear cannot easily cut you. If you thrust a blade forward, it simply slips away, protecting your chest, arms, and body."

“Energetic” Outfits
But the benefits of this modern armor go beyond physical defense. Francis describes his creations as "energetic outfits." When worn directly against the skin without undergarments, the polished coconut shells are designed to absorb solar rays, stimulating what he terms positive wellness energy to recharge the body. This philosophy of holistic utility extends across his entire product line. Nearby, smooth coconut spheres serve a dual purpose as structural coin purses and stress-relief palm massagers.

Step Into Therapy
Among his most discussed innovations at Promote is Cago’s footwear collection. Priced at 70,000 FCFA, the shoes feature custom-engineered soles that provide continuous reflexology to the feet. "Your mental health depends heavily on the position of your feet on the ground," Francis says, highlighting the intentional ventilation gaps built into the design.
"Unlike completely sealed leather shoes or sneakers where the feet cannot breathe - potentially causing illness over time - our shoes ensure constant airflow. You could wear them for a month straight without an issue."
The craftsmanship demands a premium, reflecting the labor-intensive process behind each piece. A single necklace set on display carries a price tag of 250,000 FCFA. The high price tag is the result of the meticulous labor involved. The set is crafted entirely from more than 60 individually hand-polished palm kernel shells. For dried food preservation, Coco Design also showcases intricately sealed twin flasks made from the same durable, organic materials.

Quiet Market Optimism
Now in his third appearance at the Promote salon, Francis acknowledges that while foot traffic to his stall is high, converting curious onlookers into paying customers remains a challenge in the current economic landscape.
"The economic climate means that people are not entirely ready to spend money on works like ours," he notes candidly. "Even when we explain the therapeutic benefits, some find the prices a bit high."

Flexible Promotional Discounts
To bridge the gap and encourage Yaoundé residents to experience his innovations firsthand, Coco Design is offering flexible promotional discounts for the duration of the trade fair. For Francis, the exhibition is about more than immediate sales. It is a platform to prove the viable, luxury potential of sustainable local materials.
Whether visitors come looking for a unique fashion statement, a therapeutic foot massage, or a piece of modern, spear-proof armor, Coco Design stands out as a testament to Cameroonian ingenuity. Proving that with enough creativity, even a discarded shell can shine.
