Secretary-General of OIC: Mauritania Solicits Cameroon’s Support

This was the main topic of discussion between External Relations Minister, Mbella Mbella and his Mauritanian counterpart, Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug last June 18, 2026.

Ahead of the upcoming election of the Secretary-General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) slated for later this year, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Mauritanians Abroad of Mauritania, Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug paid a courtesy visit to External Relations Minister, Mbella Mbella last June 18, 2026. The objective of the visit was to present Mauritania's candidate for the position of Secretary- General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and thus solicit Cameroon’s support. It should be noted that the Secretary- General of OIC is elected by the Council of Foreign Ministers for a renewable five-year term. The current officeholder is Hissein Brahim Taha from Chad, who was elected in 2020 and officially took up the position in November 2021, thus his mandate ends in November this year. Given that Minister Mbella Mbella is a member of the Council of Foreign Ministers and former president of the said Council, it was therefore important for Cameroon’s support to be solicited.
