Douala General Hospital: Reference Sensor To Track Air Pollution

The installation of the equipment took place on June 24, 2026.

The Douala General Hospital has marked a significant step in improving local air quality monitoring with the installation of a reference air pollution sensor. The equipment that was installed on Wednesday June 24 will go a long way to strengthen the collection of reliable environmental data needed for research, public awareness, and evidence-based policy decisions. According to the medical Director at the Douala General hospital, Pr. Mbatchou Ngahane, air pollution is increasingly recognized as a major health risk. He emphasized that understanding what people breathe is essential for disease prevention, adding that the installation of the sensor will help generate trustworthy measurements for Douala and, by extension, support studies across Cameroon. The representative of the Director General and Adviser n°1, Sou’a Jean Bertin, described the sensor as part of the institution’s broader mission, which includes specialized medical care, training, and research. He noted that the project is supported by the hospital’s research team in pneumology (respiratory medicine), with a particular focus on research and cooperation with institutions and decision-makers. The initiative, he said, is open to researchers in Douala and across Cameroon, aiming to produce practical and useful findings for the wellbeing of local communities. Meanwhile, Pr. Mbiake Robert raised the fact that the sensor will be used to verify and calibrate other commonly used monitoring devices. He explained that without calibration, measurements taken by lowcost or local sensors may not reliably reflect real conditions. By comparing local measurements against the reference, he said, “we can ensure the results are within an acceptable margin of error.” ...
