Sustainable Management 0f Natural Resources: Stakeholders Salute Programme’s Two-decade Strides

During a Steering Committee Meeting of the Programme on July 17, 2026 in Buea, members examined 2025 achievements and adopted the 2026 work plan.
T he Programme for the Sustainable Manage ment of Natural Re sources in the South West Region (PSMNR-SW), has en tered into the 6th phase as it clocks 20 years. Members of the Steering Committee drawn from different sectoral minis tries, traditional rulers and lo cal elected representatives met in Buea on July 17 to examinate the state of im plementation of the 2025 achievements and to adopt the budget as well as the work plan for 2026. Repre senting the Minister of Fo restry and Wildlife, the Ins pector General at the Ministry, Joseph Lekealem in his ope ning speech noted that PSMNR-SW has become a mo del of successful international cooperation. “For 20 years now, this Programme has de monstrated that conservation, sustainable development and wellbeing can advance toge therness through strong part nership and shared commit ments. The Programme has strengthened the manage ment of the Mount Cameroon, Korup, Takamanda, Bakossi National Parks and the Bayang-Mbo Wildlife Sanc tuary.” He said while adding that the Programme has also reinforced biodiversity conser vation, improve forest and wildlife laws enforcement, en hance institutional capacity and supported sustainable li velihoods of communities li ving around protected areas.
