Market: Hike In Onion Prices

Due to the recent increase in supply cost, consumers are feeling the effect.

There has been a noticeable rise in the price of onions in markets in Yaounde and traders attribute this rise to the shortages experienced out of their season and transportation cost. Despite the high demand for onions, clients such as Kendra Mballa admit that it has become very expen­ sive to incorporate onions into her household dishes because a bulb of onion that used to cost FCFA 50, now costs FCFA 100 and sometimes even FCFA 200. She explained that “this increase has been an issue since May and the increase is heavier than it has ever been”. Her cry is that, the amount of onions she used to buy for FCFA 500 which could amount to about eight onions if the sizes were big, is now reduced to four or less onions for the same price.
