Reproductive Health: Cameroon’s 181 Million FCFA Lifeline To UNFPA

The year 2025 was a defining moment for the United Nations Population Fund, UNFPA in Cameroon. The UN agency turned a looming humanitarian crisis into a major catalyst for national healthcare sovereignty. After facing severe international funding contractions and shifting donor priorities.

47% Funding Cut

According to UNFPA Cameroon’s 2025 Annual Report: A Year of Adaptation and Transformation, the abrupt withdrawal of humanitarian funding - most notably from the United States Agency for International Development’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance, USAID/BHA. Which slashed the agency’s Gender-Based Violence, GBV response budget by nearly 47%. Yet, rather than stalling progress, this sudden deficit forced a structural pivot toward domestic resource mobilization, institutional reform, and stronger multilateral partnerships.

Cameroon Government Funding Support

The centerpiece of the UNFPA 2025 report is Cameroon’s breakthrough national co-financing contribution of 181 million FCFA (approximately $300,000 USD) dedicated strictly to purchasing life-saving reproductive health and contraceptive commodities. Spearheaded through a joint framework between the Ministry of Economy, Planning and Regional Development, MINEPAT and the Ministry of Public Health, MINSANTE, the release of these state funds marks a historic shift away from total foreign aid dependence.

Strong Institutional Resilience

"2025 stood out not only as a period of strong institutional resilience, but above all as a true strategic inflection point," the report states. "Faced with global volatility, the response was not retraction, but national ownership." By leveraging the United Nations System’s “Delivering As One” initiative, UNFPA mobilized secondary funding streams to protect core operations across its three transformative goals. Like zero unmet need for family planning; zero preventable maternal deaths; and zero Gender-Based Violence.

Protecting The Most Vulnerable

The operational pressure was felt most acutely in Cameroon's fragile regions. Specifically, the Boko Haram-impacted Far North and the socio-politically distressed North West and South West Regions. Despite the USAID/BHA funding cliff, UNFPA’s adaptation strategy ensured that primary health centers and safe spaces remained open. The inauguration of the AFIRI Centre served as a major triumph, creating a dedicated, multi-disciplinary haven. Where survivors of Gender-Based Violence receive immediate clinical care, trauma therapy, and legal counseling under one roof.
