Cameroon-Nigeria Relations: Douala-Enugu Air Link Opens New Chapter

The inaugural flight that landed at the Douala international airport on September 23 is expected to facilitate trade, tourism, investment and exchanges between Cameroon and Nigeria.

A new chapter in Cameroon- Nigeria relations has ope­ ned with the inaugural flight of Enugu Air at Douala International Airport. The maiden flight, which landed in Douala on September 23, marks the establishment of a direct air connection between Douala, Came­ roon’s economic capital, and Enugu State in South Eastern Nigeria. The ceremony that brought toge­ ther officials from both countries revealed strong ties. For the ADC officials, the new route carried di­ plomatic, economic and commercial significance. He described the connection as a demonstration of growing confidence in Douala In­ ternational Airport and its role as a gateway to Cameroon and Central Africa. According to figures pre­ sented during the ceremony, Douala International Airport recor­ ded about 8,500 aircraft move­ ments, 600,000 passengers and 6,200 tonnes of cargo during the first half of 2025. The figures re­ flected the increasing attractive­ ness of the airport to airlines and travellers. According to the Enugu Air repre­ sentative in Cameroon Olivier Ta­ gatio the route is also expected to facilitate the movement of goods and people while creating oppor­ tunities in trade, tourism, business and investment. He noted that di­ rect air connectivity could help shorten travel time, bring markets closer and strengthen regional in­ tegration. The representative of the Douala City Council described the connec­ tion as an opportunity to reinforce economic and tourism exchanges. He noted that Douala, as Came­ roon’s economic capital, could be­ nefit from increased interaction with businesses and travellers from South Eastern Nigeria. The representative of the governor of Enugu state Professor Chede­ bere Onia said the flight is part of a broader vision to improve connec­ tivity between African cities.
