Sincerity At All Levels!

T he Community Dialogue for Peace Initiative that Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute laun­ ched in Buea on Monday September 28, 2026 constitutes one of the multiple moves go­ vernment has taken to bring to an end the bestial conflict that has rocked the South West and North West Regions for almost a decade now. In fact, legitimate complaints tabled by teachers of the English sub-system of education and Common Law lawyers over insufficiencies in their respective sectors, which government provided adequate responses to, spiralled into an armed battle with thousands of irreplaceable human life and valuable property already lost. As a matter of fact, the two restive regions are a shadow of themselves. Difficult therefore to understand why hoodlums long hijacked the situation to now wreak havoc on the very people they claimed to fight for. The economy of the two regions is on its knees and the population are suffering. They have been begging for recovery out of the crisis. The merits of dialogue as outlined by the Head of Government in Buea, re-echoing the unshakable stance of the Head of State, speak to all and sundry. The population needs to talk among them­ selves, identify the common enemy and federate efforts to extinguish the stubborn destroyer before it completely shatters life and livelihood in the regions. In effect, if so much has been said about the crisis and mountains moved to halt it to no vail, there is every reason to feel that there is still a missing link. It could be lack of or insufficient sin­ cerity among the actors of the sorry situation. Those who are feeding fat from it wouldn’t want the crisis to end. Likewise, others who have taken advantage of the conflict to settle scores. All must be ready to look at a particular direction and say, “Enough is Enough!” What gain would the regions have when their children cannot conveniently go to school and study in all tranquillity like others elsewhere. What future will the regions have when pens have been stripped off the hands of their youngs­ ters and replaced with guns. The once vibrant in­ dustry in the two regions – education, long col­ lapsed and they lag behind in end-of-course exa­ minations. The number of candidates and results from the recent examinations tell it all. The same dark cloud hovers over the economy with small and big industries suffocating alike. This is regrettable but the culture of silence from the helpless population and or complicity are all shameful. The population knows those who are terrorising them and their respective hideouts.
