The major difference at the 20thn edition of the University games was the introduction of an academic and economic touch to inspire and promote students and institutions that emerge in initiatives and creativity. Away from sport playgrounds, some 115 students were part of a special competition at the students’ genius and talents fair with a special Presidential offer of CFA 25 million to reward the best innovative projects in the domains of Agriculture, Science, Social and Human Sciences, literary and Artistic creativity.
Prof. Maral Fouda Ndjodo and Prof. Wilfred Gabsa of the Grand Jury told the closing event of the University games that of the total 67 projects presented for examination, 11 excelled and fetched CFA one million each to move the projects forward from research levels. Each of the 15 institutions that featured participating students took home Cfa 500.000, Project Supervisors had Cfa 50.000 each and each participating student or project received Cfa 50.000 in encouragement. Rewarding the beneficiaries, Higher Education Minister, Prof. Jacques Fame Ndongo said it was all about President Paul Biya’s commitment to inspire and promote ingenuity, audacity and creativity in the nation’s youths.

Doba Tchoumo Leon: “Record Setting Games”

Technical Official, athletics

“The games ended in Bambili with very encouraging performances. The games set the pace with eight new records. It is indicative that the future is greater for the nation’s sports movement with youths who have the potential to rise and shine. I was also impressed with the level of discipline displayed by athletes. They comported very well and there was little to worry about especially as the host university showed goodwill and humility as first time host of the huge competitions. The only worry is that the food was good but not quantitative enough for athletes”.

 Ngiri  Blandine: “Sanitation Was Good”

Athlete, University of Buea

“The 2017 University Games offered an opportunity for the University of Buea to celebrate with a gold medal that I fetched in Wrestling.  It was a great event during which athletes and officials mixed and competed in fair play. I was happy with the successful hosting by the University of Bamenda, though the games’ took place in uncompleted infrastructure. I was however, impressed with sanitary facilities during the games. The games are over and I am poised to continue with my Level 400 Banking and Finance studies once back in Buea”
