Mercy Ships: Registration Of Patients Ends Today

The identification and selection of those who will receive free health care from the International NGO will continue henceforth.

Registration of patients eligible to receive free treatment from the International Humanitarian Non-Governmental Organisation Mercy Ships ends today, May 17, 2017 at different district hospitals in Cameroon. Since April 17, 2017, Cameroonians from all the nooks and crannies in the country with complicated medical problems and malformations have been registering their names in different hospitals in the country for imminent proper health care from the Africa Mercy Hospital Ship which has agreed to stay in Cameroon from August 2017 to June 2018, for a 10-month care mission. At the invitation of the Head of State, President Paul Biya the Africa Mercy Hospital Ship will berth and stay at the Autonomous Port of Douala in the Littoral Region from August 2017. After registration of patients, identification and selection of eligible patients will continue by the team already deployed in all health districts to select patients for the types of surgeries offered by Mercy ships given that the capacity to absorb demand for therapeutic care during this mission has been capped at 6,000 patients. This phase will be completed within three weeks to allow for the planning and programming of surgical procedures which start in two months. Activities onboard the Africa Mercy Hospital Ship are mainly oriented towards surgery, more specifically on general and orthopedic surgery: deformities related to neglected trauma, clubfoot corrections and congenital deformities; Maxillo-facial surgery-removal of non-cancerous deforming tumors, correcting of cleft clip and palates, and the removal of goiters. Mercy Ship mission will also provide reconstructive plastic surgery such as congenital abnormalities, bone contractures, chronic ulcers and huge tumors; gynecological surgery-obstetric fistulas and huge fibroids. The mission is placed under the distinguished Patronage of the First Lady of Cameroon, Mrs Chantal Biya, who is also UNECSO Goodwill Ambassador

Monsieur le ministre beaucoup de personnes se posent des questions au sujet du navire-hôpital,  Mercy Ships qui arrive. Qui est concerné par cette opération et qui ne l'est pas ?
Les personnes concernées sont celles qui ont des malformations de la face, de la tête ou du cou. Les personnes qui ont des hydrocèles, des masses mammaires, goitres et dans les cas très limités, celles ayant des grosses hernies. Les Camerounais ayant des malformations des membres supérieurs ou inférieurs, des cicatrices de grandes brûlures ou autres traumatismes seront aussi pris en charge. Les femmes ayant de grosses complications obstétricales ou des fistules obstétricales seront également opérées.
Que faut-il faire pour bénéficier de ces soins gratuits ?
Nous avons dépêché dans chaque chef lieu de région et dans les différents hôpitaux de districts, des équipes qui reçoivent les malades depuis le 17 avril. Ces derniers n’ont pas besoin de venir à Yaoundé ou Douala. Chacun doit se rendre dans son hôpital de district pour que les médecins apprécient le problème et voient s’il peut être pris en charge dans le cadre de cette mission humanitaire.
