Gabonese Crisis: AU Mediation Mission Ready

A joint African Union (AU) and United Nations (UN) team is ready and would get to Libreville once visiting conditions are met.

 

President Idriss Deby Itno of Chad who is also the current chairperson of the African Union (AU) says a high level delegation composed of African Heads of State, senior officials of the AU Commission as well as those United Nations is ready to go to Libreville once visiting conditions will be met in order to help broker peace in the country, the Chinese government news agency, XINHUA reported.

Idriss Deby said he was following up closely the situation in Gabon that degenerated into violence on August 31, 2016 when incumbent President Ali Bongo Ondimba was declared winner of the August 27 presidential election. He said he was in constant communication with the main actors, as well as other concerned parties in the crisis. Mr Deby reaffirmed in a release published on Monday that the African Union was ready to contribute to the quest for a peaceful solution to the post-electoral tension. He said the mediators would ensure the respect of constitutional and legal provisions, as well as instruments of the African Union in matters of democracy and elections.
