Obituary: President’s Family Buries Beloved

Mama Paulette Assam Mvondo, wife of the deceased elder brother of President Biya, was laid to rest last Friday, June 23, 2017 at Mvomeka’a in the South Region.

There are moments in life, when words are hard to find to help express how one truly feels, even for a reporter. And the funeral of the late Mrs. Zing Andang Paulette Epse Assam Mvondo, the wife of the President’s late elder brother, Benoit Mvondo Assam, was one of such moments. Attended by a conspicuous number of national and international personalities, the burial ceremony of Mama Paulette Assam Mvondo, which took place last Friday June 23, 2017, at Mvomeka’a in the Meyomessala Division of the South Region, was a blend of the regal serenity for which the deceased was known, and the benevolent devotedness that had characterised her relationships, both with her family and her community.
The air was heavy with grief and the sense of loss was palpable. Even the dark glasses that adorned most of the faces did not suffice to hide the tear-stained cheeks of ladies or the deep furrows of pain that decked the foreheads of men. During a special mass at the Mvomeka Saint Etienne Chapel, the Archbishop of Sangmelima, Christophe Zoa, speaking with inspiration from the Bible book of Proverbs, Apostle’s Paul letter to the Corinthians and the Gospel of John, said death has assembled the congregation in prayer and support to the deceased family. No matter the age of the person who has passed away, Mgr Christophe Zoa said, dead remains a moment of pain for the biological and extended family. Although observers try to measure the pain felt by the deceased family, the Archbishop of Sangmelima said in faith, the family will find peace knowing that their mother is going to a better place for she has been liberated from her daily chores to assume her angelic duties in a marriage with her creator.
In a condolence message to the Etienne Mvondo clan, the Archbishop of Yaounde, His Lordship Jean Mbarga, highlighted the fact that the impressive crowd of mourners and well-wishers at the funeral, is testimony both to the great appreciation the people had for the deceased, and to the profound depth of the esteem ...
