Eliminated by host Morocco in the quarterfinals, the team that was not expected in this level of the competition exits with heads high, giving signals of a promising future.
When the final whistle blew at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat on January 9, 2026, Cameroon’s young squad walked off the pitch without tears, but with a quiet pride. The scoreline read 0-2, and while the result was a disappointment, the journey itself had been extraordinary. A team assembled only weeks before the tournament had reached the quarter-finals, a performance better than their round of 16 exit in the last AFCON. The boys of Coach David Pagou demonstrated resilience and the fighting spirit that Cameroonians cherish. Against the continent’s elite, they held their ground, only finally falling to a Moroccan side superior in skill, physicality, and momentum.
Morocco’s advantage was not limited to the pitch. The home crowd; loyal, loud, and electric; painted the stadium red, turning every attack into a wave of pressure. Cameroon felt it early. About halfway through the first half, they lost right winger Junior Tchamadeu to injury, and his replacement, Dina Ebimbe, struggled to make an impact. Morocco dominated possession, forcing the Lions to chase the game. In the 26th minute, Brahim Díaz broke the deadlock, delighting the home fans. His goal marked his fifth consecutive AFCON game with a goal, a feat only previously achieved by Ghana’s Osei Kofi.
Yet the Lions refused to wilt. In the second half, Cameroon came out with renewed determination. They attacked with urgency, creating moments of promise. Substitute Georges-Kevin Nkoudou rose for a header from a corner, only for the ball to drift just wide; a fleeting glimpse of hope. Morocco’s defense, however, remained impenetrable.
