Fight Against Corruption: Using AI To Enhance Evidence Gathering

This is one of the recommendations adopted at the 16th Regional Conference of Heads of Anti-Corruption Agencies in Commonwealth Africa, hosted by Cameroon which ended on May 8.

Eight recommendations were adopted at the end of the 16th Regional Conference and Annual General Meeting of Heads of Anti-Corruption Agencies in Commonwealth Africa, which concluded in May 8, 2026 in Yaounde. Deliberations unfolded under the theme,” Deploying Artificial Intelligence in the Fight Against Corruption in Commonwealth Africa,” with 25 anticorruption agencies from 20 Commonwealth Africa countries participating. Stakeholders reached a consensus on advancing joint action and reforms to explore potential actions for financial and technical assistance towards development and implementation of capacity building support in enhancing detection and investigation of corruption, promote mutual cooperation in acceleration of digital transformation in public service delivery to promote transparency and accountability, as well as enhance policy frameworks that promote effective civil means of recovery of State stolen assets. Empowering young people with meaningful tools in order for them to deploy AI and contribute towards building a culture of integrity, build the capacities of anti-corruption workforce to effectively utilise the different forms of Artificial Intelligence to enhance evidence gathering in investigations and prosecution of corruption cases and lobby governments to support strategic measures that embrace digital technologies to prevent corruption in public contracts and promote transparency in management of public finances are other recommendations that were adopted. The Conference also confirmed that the National Anti-Corruption Commission of Cameroon (CONAC) will assume the Chair of the Association of Anti-Corruption Agencies in Commonwealth Africa for the 2026 – 2027 period, and the Republic of Kenya will host the 17th Commonwealth Regional Conference for Heads of Anti-Corruption Agencies in Africa and Annual General Meeting in 2027, in partnership with the Commonwealth Secretariat.
