2026 Women’s AFCON: Tough Semi-finals Fixtures In View

Following the conclusion of the quarterfinals on August 9, 2026, Morocco will play Cameroon while Algeria will take on Malawi in the last four.

O ne of the greatest sto­ ries so far in the on­ going Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAF­ CON) in Morocco has been the fairy-tale run of Malawi. Compe­ ting at their first-ever Women’s AFCON, the Scorchers have ex­ ceeded expectations by reaching the semi-finals and securing one of Africa’s slots at the FIFA Wo­ men’s World Cup Brazil 2027. The Malawian side defeated Ghana 2-1 in the quarterfinals on Au­ gust 9, 2026 to advance. Malawi had signalled its intent earlier by beating reigning champion Nige­ ria in their opening Group C match and finishing top of the group that also included the likes of Zambia. This determined and ambitious Malawian side will face Algeria in the semi-final on August 12, 2026 at the Olympic Stadium of Rabat. Algeria are also in fine form after coming from behind to beat Côte d’Ivoire 2-1 in the quar­ terfinals on August 8, 2026. Another major upset came from Cameroon. The Indomitable Lio­ nesses, who only gained a place in the tournament after its ex­ pansion from 12 to 16 teams, have made the most of their op­ portunity.
