Road Infrastructure: Bamenda, The Great Transformation

I t will not be an overstate­ ment to say that the North West Regional capital, Ba­ menda, is currently a busy work site as far as road construc­ tion is concerned. From Welcome to Bamenda at the entrance into the city from the West Region where Lot 3 of the Babadjou- Bamenda road project starts through Bamendankwe in Ba­ menda Subdivision to Ecole des Champions right down to Amour Mezam Junction in Bamenda III Subdivision, people who have not been to Bamenda for more than four years would hardly be­ lieve that they are in the city. A double-lane road now passes through these areas. The Wel­ come to Bamenda, Tradex-Cus­ toms Junction-Finance Junction stretch of road used by all people entering Bamenda is now agreea­ bly unrecognizable by road users. Rehabilitation of this stretch of road is almost completely ren­ dering it enjoyable for all and sundry. The real wonder that makes the population happy though they from time to time suffer road blocks and deviations is the 6.5 km Bamenda Urban Crossing which covers Amour Mezam Junc­ tion-Finance Junction-Veterinary Junction passing through Ayaba Street- T-Junction to Hospital Roundabout and makes a U-turn through Food Market- City Che­ mist Roundabout through SONAC Street back to Veterinary Junction. Work of this sector of the road which is Lot 4B of the Babad­ jou-Bamenda road project the Prime Minister Head of Govern­ ment Chief Dr Joseph Dion offi­ cially launched on September 17, 2025 is advancing progressively. This will be a double lane road that will link to the first part of the double-lane road from Wel­ come to Bamenda right down to Amour Mezam Junction. There are also other ongoing road pro­ jects that are linking the hinter­ lands of diverse neighbourhoods to the main sector that cuts across the city. These are roads constructed by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development and some with funds from the Cameroon-France partnership Debt Reduction-Development Contract (C2D).
