Guinea-Bissau: Many Die In Umpteenth Attempted Coup

Unidentified gunmen on February 2, 2022 attacked the building where President Umaro Sissoco Embalo was meeting with Prime Minister Nuno Gomez Nabiam.

An undisclosed number of people died in the Guinea Bissau capital, Bissau on Tuesday, February 2, 2022 after gunmen stormed the Presidential Palace, but were successfully repelled. President Umaro Sissoco Embalo described the act as a “failed attack against democracy,” the British Broadcasting Corporation, BBC reported. The attack took place as President Embalo was meeting with Prime Minister Nuno Gomez Nabiam.

A security source told the BBC that unidentified gunmen in civilian clothes opened fire, killing a police officer. While assuring the nation that the situation was under control, President did not put a figure on the number of deaths and wounded. Neither did he say if any arrests had been made or not. West African regional leaders described the incident as a coup attempt and urged troops to return to barracks.
