Cameroon-EU Cooperation : Penja Pepper Registered Geographical Protected Indication

The certificate of recognition was officially handed to the Ambassador of Cameroon in the Kingdom of Belgium Daniel Evina Abe’e on April 6, 2022.

The Director General for Agriculture and Rural Development of (DG AGRI) of the European Commission, Wolfgang Burtscher on April 6, 2022 received in audience Cameroon’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium, Daniel Evina Abe’e during which he handed over to the ambassador the certificate recognising the Penja PepperPoivre de Penja” as the Geographical Protected Indication (GPI) in the European Union.  Ambassador Daniel Evina Abe’e represented the State of Cameroon during the event.
The handing over of the recognition certificate was to concretise the announcement done on March 17, 2022 by the European Commission that the pepper was to be registered in the EU as  PGI. PGI is a sign used on products that have specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due that origin. It is also an intellectual property title that seeks to protect and promote traditional and local products. 
As to the importance of the recognition, henceforth, the Penja Pepper will be stamped with the logo PGI (IGP in French) , which will enable the consumers to recognise the label in the market. The registration further guarantees the protection of the rights of the members of the local farming a...
