Commonwealth Games: Cameroon Wins First Gold Medal

Junior Periclex Ngadja brought home the victory in the men’s 109kg weightlifting competition yesterday at the Coventry Arena in Birmingham.

The future appears to be bright for Cameroonian athletes at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham England. Junior Periclex Ngadja won gold in the men’s 109kg weightlifting category that took place yesterday August 3, 2022 at the Coventry arena. The 29-year-old lifted 160kg in the snatch before adding a further 201kg in the clean and jerk to beat silver medallist Jack Hitila Opeloge of Samoa by just three kilograms.

Junior Periclex Ngadja Nyabeyeu celebrated Weightlifting gold as Cameroon claimed their first medal of the Games in the men's 109kg as he edged a narrow contest with a combined lift of 361kg at the NEC. That was the first gold medal for Cameroon in Birmingham and the first medal in any sports discipline. The medal comes after six days of competition without any medal for Cameroon. The victory has also come to put an end to the medal draught for Team Cameroon. It is also believed that the gold medal will serve as a booster for the other Cameroonian athletes still in the competition.
