Desert Control: China Holds United Nations-backed International Forum

Participants from 30 countries on July 30, 2017 ended a three-day conference in Kubuqi Desert.

 

Over 300 stakeholders from over 30 countries met at the Kubuqi International Convention Centre in northeast China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region from July 28-30, 2017, for an international forum on desert control. The participants were high-level government and international organization officials, scientists, business leaders, entrepreneurs, economists and media representatives. The theme of the 6th Kubuqi International Desert Forum was; “Greening the Belt and Road, Sharing the Desert Eco-economy.”

The forum was initiated in 2007 to promote ecological economic development and mitigate desertification issues. A conference source said Elion Resources Group shared its new ecological big data and use of water containers in planting desert trees. “Using innovative technologies 10 times more efficient than traditional methods, Elion has been able to cultivate over 1,000 cold-resistant, drought-enduring and saline-tolerant plant seeds. It has also initiated an ecological photovoltaic industry that integrates desertification control, power generation, plantation agriculture, animal husbandry and poverty alleviation,” the source added.

Meanwhile, Elion Resources Group has in 30 years reclaimed a third of Kubuqi Desert for human habitation and agriculture. According to official sources in Kubuqi, the purpose of the forum was to seek greater support for desertification control. The forum was co-organised by the U...
