Military Honours Comfort Mourners

Defence Boss, on behalf of the Head of State, gave posthumous decoration to 11 of the 34 that perished following military vessel capsize.

Flags flying at half-mast, victims’ families and well-wishers dressed in mourning, tears of farewell, authorities in grief and a gloomy weather characterised the solemn coffining ceremony of 11 of the 34 soldiers and civilians that lost their lives after a military warship dubbed “Le Mundemba” overturned around Debunscha on July 16 due to rough waves. While paying a national homage to the 34 soldiers and civilians that perished in the warship en route to Bakassi for a mission, the defence family manifested their grief through military rituals while majestically marching with the caskets of 11 of the 34 to the ceremonial ground beginning with that of Lt Colonel Musa who led the mission.

The Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of Defence, Joseph Beti Assomo, who presided over the ceremony, gave a posthumous decoration to the 11 bodies fished out before the national homage ceremony Friday, July 28, at the 201 Airforce Base in Douala. The bodies that comprised nine soldiers, a police officer and a civilian were decorated in the presence of two of the three soldiers rescued from the tragic incident. Defence Boss, Joseph Beti Assomo, also awarded medals of recognition to the two soldiers present at the gloomy ceremony.

Before the reading of the Head of State’s condolence message to the bereaved families by Wouri SDO, Joseph Bertrand Mache Njouonwet, BIR Coast Guard Commander, Belinga Henry, painted a vivid story of the unfortunate incident. He disclosed that the vessel en route to the Bakassi peninsular on a mission, left Limbe Sunday July 16 at 4:30am with 37 people among whom were 21 soldiers, 12 civilians as well as construction material on-board. After sailing for about an hour, they come across very rough waves that led to the sinking of the vessel near Debunscha within the twinkle of an eye (about two minutes after). The warship, Le Mundemba, sank to the depth of 35 metres below water level with 34 persons inside the cabin of the vessel. The three survivors, he said, made it because they were on guard out of the cabin.

In addition to the two days of national mourning observed on July 28 and 29, the Head of State and Commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces, has instructed that the search should be intensified in ordeqr to fish out more bodies.

Je propose qu’un monument soit érigé à leur hommage spécialement ».

« Deux jours de drapeau en berne, ça n’arrive pas tout le temps. Il le fallait. C’est triste on va faire comment ? C’est un accident. Quand il arrive, il ne prévient pas.
