Economic Commission for Africa: Vera Songwe Takes Command

She was commissioned as new Executive Secretary on August 3, 2017.

 

Cameroonian –born Vera Songwe   on August 3, 2017 officially took office as the new Executive Secretary of the Economic for Africa (ECA) during a ceremony in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, information from ECA indicated.  The Cameroonian economist and banking executive was appointed to the position on April 17, 2017 by the Secretary General of the United Nations Organisation, Antonio Guterres. She is the first woman to occupy the post.

After taking office, Vera Songwe was reportedly programmed to meet the Ethiopian Prime Minister,  Hailemariam Desalegn the same day  as well as the Foreign Affairs Minister of Ethiopia, Workneh Gebeyehu. She was also programmed to meet the Vice President of the African Union, Thomas Kwasi Quartey and the Minister of Finance and Economic Cooperation of Ethiopia, Abraham Tekeste on August 4, 2017, as well as  the Ambassador of Cameroon, Jacques Alfred Ndoumbe-Eboule, who is also the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps.
