SELF DISCIPLINE : Doing the things you know you should do, when you should do them, without being told.
Example at home: Remembering to do a task or chore before having to be reminded. It could be simple like remembering to brush their teeth. Or it might be more responsibility like feeding a pet.
Learning through the martial arts: In class we show and describe how to do movements correctly. It is up to the student to remember to do the technique correctly. We can show it, but it is up to the student to try and improve through effort. Then they are rewarded, not simply by the instructor recognizing them, but also the feeling of doing it well.
RESPECT : Treating others the way you want to be treated.
Example at home: Recognizing when someone has done something for them. It can be as simple as saying "thank you" when they are driven to karate. This rule is all about realizing how other people impact their lives and how they impact the lives of others with their manners.
Learning through the martial art: As the students enter the dojo, or practice area, we teach them to bow. We explain that it's a space that is shared by all of us who attend the school. It's to remind them that the space is there for them, but also for many other people. This helps them learn about being respe...
