Chantal Biya International Cycling Race: Cully Jan Andrej Wins First Lap

The first lap took place along the Yaounde-Ayos highway yesterday October 12, 2017

 

Thousands of spectators thronged the esplanade of the Yaounde Omnisport Stadium yesterday October 12, 2017 to watch the takeoff of the first lap of the 17th edition of the Chantal Biya International Cycling Race. 
The race kicked off at 10:00 a.m. with all the 57 cyclists present. It was a bright morning with temperatures at about 29°c which is typical of Yaounde at this time of the year. As the caravan rode past villages in the heart of the equatorial forest the public came out massively to cheer the cyclists. In areas where there are schools, pupils and students lined the main road to salute the athletes. It was an opportunity for people in the hinterland to discover more about cycling and for the youths to dream of becoming cyclists in future. No major incidents were recorded and security measures were taken to ensure safety. The cyclists were riding at a speed of 43km/ph. At the end of the competition, Cully Jan Andrej of Dukla Banska Bystrica from Slovakia and Kamzong Abossolo of SNH Velo Club finished at the same time in 2h54’19”. But the victory was given to Cully Jan Andrej after close examination. Mahdar Martin of Dukla Banska Bystrica from Slovakia was third in 2h54’33”. 
The yellow jersey for the overall winner went to Cully Jan Andrej. He equally got the green jersey for the best number of points on the classification table. The jersey for the best climber went to Mahdar Martin from Slovakia and the jersey for the best youth went to Cully Jan Andrej. Kamzong Abossolo won the jersey for the best Cameroonian while Tekou Damien of the National Cycling Team was the second best Cameroonian.
