Revision of Electoral Registers: Political Parties Intensify Strategies

Following the reopening of electoral registers on January 2, political parties are multiplying efforts and mechanisms of getting supporters effectively enlisted to vote.

The current political context of the nation in which several elections are anticipated has pushed political parties to be active in rallying, encouraging and getting more persons inscribed on the electoral list. As the days elapse, strategies are intensified in order to acquire as many potential voters as possible before the Electoral College is convened by the Head of State.

Going by the stipulations of Article 53(2) of the Electoral Code, legalised political parties are expected to have a representatives in the commission of the establishment and distribution of voters cards in concerned municipalities.

On such basis, their active participation in the registration, distribution and revision of electoral registers is indispensible. For the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement, CPDM, activities are tailored at encouraging party supporters of voting age to ensure that they are duly registered with relevant corrections pertaining to parentage, residence and cases of deceased persons updated before any elections are summoned.

In a circular from the Secretary General of the Central Committee, Jean Nkuété, the CPDM party shall during its list revision process carry out specific tasks which will lead to concrete results and provide quantifiable, measureable and reliable data.

“Practically, during the revision of CPDM electoral lists, we will ensure the effective registration on electoral rolls of all duly registered militants as per party records, all CPDM supporters above 20 years of age and who have not yet registered, ensure that relevant corrections are made on the name and parentage of all registered persons in order to avoid any prejudicial errors, facilitate the collection of national identity cards by our voters who are not yet registered and report any case of deceased person,” partly reads the release.
