Yarha Film Festival: Competition for Directors Introduced

The revelation was made during a press briefing in Yaounde on September 6, 2018.

The fifth edition of the Yarha Film Festival will take place in Yaounde from November 9 to 18, 2018. The revelation was made during a press briefing in Yaounde on September 6, 2018 granted by the organisers.

Speaking during the press briefing, the President of the Yarha Film Festival, Sylvie Nwet, told journalists that the fifth Edition of the Festival will incorporate new workshops with the most important being the introduction of competitions amongst movie directors. She said this will encourage them forge ahead in their occupation.

“Young movie directors will be given the opportunity to compete amongst each other and will be encouraged with prices in cash and kind”, the President of the Yarha association said. She again emphasized that in the past years, the festival focused on the projection of the first films of movie directors as it was decided from creation in 2014. This time, the best movie director will go back home with not only a word of encouragement but with a physical award.

She believes that valorizing the first film of any movie director will work a million times to encourage them do more.  Sylvie Nwet also mentioned the active participation of women in the upcoming festival in terms of movie directing.

“Women will be encouraged to take up film directing as profession as the career seems to have been taken over by men”, she said. A competition will also be organised for auxiliary professions in film making like makeup artist, costumier and decor.

Going by the President of the association, these minor professions might be ignored but remains the backbone to every successful movie.  The festival will also be a platform to commemorate the five years of existence of the Yarha Film Festival and a presentation of what has been achieved since creation.
