Argentina : Alberto Fernandez Elected President

Alberto Fernandez is the new President of Argentina. He was elected on Sunday, October 27, 2019 during an election that was dominated by economic concerns. With more than 96 percent of polls counted, the lawyer and former cabinet official had 48.03 percent of the votes, ahead of incumbent Mauricio Macri with 40.44 percent. Analyst say though the difference was narrower than predicted in numerous polls, it was above the 45 percent required to declare a winner on the first round. Voter turnout according to the National Electoral Directorate was 80.8 percent.

Incumbent President Mauricio Macri conceded defeat and invited Fernandez for breakfast to begin the transition process. "The only thing that matters here is the future and wellbeing of Argentinians," he told his crowd of supporters, promising a "constructive opposition". Fernandez's win unleashed euphoria in parts of Buenos Aires, as supporters cruised the streets honking their car horns, and a wave of people surged towards the neighbourhood of Chacarita, where the official victory party was held.
