Regard : Crucial Step In Right Direction


The resolution of the security crisis in the North West and South West Regions and heightened efforts for the return to normalcy and development entered another decisive phase on Wednesday, August 19, 2020.  The Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji on behalf of government organized consultation sessions with traditional rulers from the two regions who had sought refuge in Yaounde. They came accompanied by members of their elite to chart ways of enabling the traditional rulers go back in peace to their respective villages to once more take up their functions as custodians of the traditions and cultures, auxiliaries of the administration and community development movers and shakers.
The efforts to get the traditional rulers who have been among the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) go back to their villages is the crucial step in the right direction. Indeed, the success of the operation will come to complement the various efforts government and its partners have been making to resolve the crisis. The absence of the some traditional rulers represented a missing link and created a vacuum in the whole operation, considering that both modern and traditional efforts have to be synergised to find a lasting solution to the crisis. This is because the consultation and the evocation of the ancestors as part of crisis resolution, according to the belief systems of many localities in the North West and South West Regions can only be done by traditional rulers. Their absence according to Senator Fon Chafah XI of Bangolan in the North West Region and who also doubles as the Secretary General of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Cameroon means “the absence of the village.”
