16 January - Iran’s long-standing sanctions are lifted by the US and European nations. The measures on financial and petroleum transactions were lifted after Iran dismantled its nuclear weapons.

22 March - Terrorists attack Brussels in Belgium, killing 31 people and injuring over 300 others. The targets were the city’s airport and subway near European Union institutions.

10 April - A blaze sparked by fireworks kills at least 100 people at a Hindu temple in India’s Kerala State. The fireworks exploded as thousands gathered to celebrate a local New Year festival.

23 June - A ceasefire between the Colombian government and rebels ends a 50-yerar civil war. The war killed over 220,000 people and displaced six million others.

15 July - Scores of people are killed in Turkey and more than 1,400 others wounded after a botched coup. The coup failed after crowds took to the streets in support of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

23 August - Over 300 people die in eastern and central India as severe flooding destroys villages, crops, and roads. Government officials said heavy monsoon rains affected over six million people.

2 September - The first and only President of Uzbekistan, Islam Karimov, dies of stroke. He led the country for 25 years from 1989. Two years after, he declared Uzbekistan an independent nation.

29 October - Thousands protest South Korea’s political scandal, blaming Choi Soon-sil of exerting undue influence on President Park Geun-hye. Choi was apparently involved in shady government deals.

8 November - Donald Trump, a Republican, elected 45th President of USA. He beat Hillary Clinton of the Democratic Party who was widely tipped by opinion polls to win.

19 December - Russia’s Ambassador to Turkey, Andrey Karlov, is assassinated at an art gallery exhibition in Ankara by a dismissed policeman. The event was meant to promote Russian culture.
