AFCON 2023 Preliminaries : Gambia Takes One Step Ahead

Gambia has taken a step ahead in their road to the 2023 Total Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire. The Scorpions beat the Saos of Chad 1-0 in the away leg preliminary match that took place at the Yaounde Omnisports Stadium yesterday March 23, 2022. Cameroon being as a home for Chad, the grand stands were occupied by mostly Chadian supporters who came from different parts of the country to cheer their team to victory. It was an exciting game with both sides full of determination to grab the three points of the day.  Chad began the game well, putting pressure on the Gambians. Despite their good attacking skills, they were unable to concretise their chances.

The Scorpions of Gambia fought back and equally had opportunities but lost them. Coach Tom Saintfiet had to get out of the bench several times to give instructions to his players. The Saos of Chad had full control of the first half and even benefited a free kick at the 44th minute which could have opened scores but they squandered the opportunity. Both teams separated at half time on a 0-0 score margin.

On resumption, the Chadians continued with their domination but they lacked finishing. Both sides had to make some substitutions to boost their teams. Even though the Saos of Chad put up much pressure the Gambians appeared more technical in their game. That paid off and at the 86th minute replacement player,
