The market for second-hand goods in Douala is a thriving one. More people are opening up to the concept of used products as they are becoming readily available, and affordability may not just be the reason. But the disturbing news about these goods is that more and more of them are imported even when they can no longer be used.
At the sides of every street in Douala is an array of second-hand goods like cutleries, electrical gadgets like television and hand sets, distributors, computers, musical sets like speakers, electronic keyboards, furniture, medical equipment and body and foot wears. Although they may look glossy in appearance not all are good. Most often most need some repairs. In a more critical situation a good number of them need major repairs including replacement of parts or they are totally out of function. There have been pockets of explosions of second-hand electrical gadgets that were sometimes fatal and caused major fire outbreaks in some neighbourhoods in Douala in recent past. Traders often have warehouses that are sometimes full with stocks that are out of use.
