Build A Competitive Squad

It will be the eighth time the team will be participating at the final phase of the world’s biggest soccer jamboree. While Cameroonians go celebrating their heroic victory, many questions are being raised with regards to the Indomitable Lions’ participation at the final phase of the FIFA World Cup. The most important of these questions is what will be our performance at the World Cup? This question springs from the fact that after eight participations, the Lions have succeeded in putting up only two honorable shows. In 1982 during their first participation, they made Africa proud by departing from the competition without a defeat.

Eight years after (1990), they moved deep into the quarter-finals of the competition after robbing shoulders with soccer hallmark nations. Though their participation helped the African continent gain more places at the final phase as they became the first African country to reach the quarterfinals of the competition, it however paved the way for dismal performances. From 1994 to 2014, the Lions never went beyond the group stage of the competition scoring zero point in their last two participations. Apart from intestinal wrangling in the soccer house, the successive poor results brought to light the problem of inadequate preparations.

To put an end to this phenomenon, it’s time we start preparing for the November 2022 tournament by putting in place a viable programme that would enable the Lions give a good account of themselves rather than go to Qatar for “soccer pilgrimage”. We know that since last Tuesday, speculations are rife with regards to who will be in the delegation and who will not. Witch-hunting, backstabbing should give way for professionalism.
