Living Together : Peace Efforts Stepped Up

Cameroon joined the international community on May 16, 2022 to commemorate the International Day of Living Together in Peace.


The President of the National Commission for the Promotion of Bilingualism and Multiculturalism, Peter Mafany Musonge has used the occasion of the commemoration of the International Day of Living Together in Peace to urge all stakeholders to redouble their efforts so that , “our country remains, as it has always been, a haven of peace at the service of an emerging Cameroon, built by each and everyone of us for everybody, and not by some against others.”
The Commission, Mr Musonge said in a press release, is taking the opportunity, “ in accordance with its missions to reaffirm its commitment to contribute to the preservation of peace, the consolidation of national unity and the strengthening of the willingness and day-to-day experience with respect to harmonious living together.”
The day is being commemorated a few days to the celebration of the golden jubilee of the advent of the Unitary State in Cameroon which is the bedrock of the peaceful living together of citizens from all parts of the country.  Living together in peace in Cameroon is not a bed of roses and an achievement, considering security challenges posed by the Boko Haram terrorist sect in the Far North Region. There are also the separatist activities in the North West and South West Regions that have thrown the regions into socio-political crisis since 2017. The country is also faced with the upsurge of hate speech found in some public gatherings, traditional and social media networks. Tribalism and regionalism tendencies are also perceptible and represent a veritable obstacle to the living together in peace in Cameroon.
