Junior Periclex Ngada : Powerful Weightlifter

The 29-year-old lifted 160kg in the snatch before adding a further 201kg in the clean and jerk to give the country its first gold medal in the competition.

Junior Periclex Ngada Nyabeyeu made Cameroon proud at the just ended Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. He won the won gold for Cameroon in the 109kg weightlifting competition six days after the start of the competition when hopes of medals for Cameroon had almost withered away. The 29-year-old lifted 160kg in the snatch before adding a further 201kg in the clean and jerk to beat silver medalist Jack Hitila Opeloge of Samoa by just three kilograms. He got a combined lift of 361kg at the NEC Halls.  That was the first gold medal for Cameroon in Birmingham, in any sport and the first medal of any colour.
