South Korea's qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 has extended its run of successive FIFA World Cup appearances to 10 in a row, every edition since 1986; a record for a country which has never lifted the trophy. The South Korean’s that are participating in their 11th World Cup overall finished second in Group A in the final round of Asian qualification behind Iran to pick one of the continent’s spots in the global competition. By qualifying for their 11th World Cup and being ranked 28th in the world, the team is one of the most successful Asian sides in football.
Its best performance in the World Cup remains its fourth-place finish in 2002 when it co-hosted the tournament with Japan. In the 2010 tournament, held in South Africa eight years later, the Asian side advanced to the Round of 16, where they were ultimately eliminated by Uruguay 2-1. Having been placed in Group H with Uruguay, Portugal and Ghana, the South Korean’s will have an opportunity for payback against Uruguay in their opening match on November 24, 2022.
