Land Governance : Proposals Of Parliamentarians To Limit Conflicts

A two -day Parliament -Government dialogue on managing large-scale concessions ends at the National Assembly today, November 16, 2022.


Government, Parliament, large-scale agricultural companies and local communities are expected to propose workable, conflict- free models to be included in the land reform currently being drafted that will ensure the harmonious management and peaceful cohabitation between investors in large land concessions and the local communities. This will be at the end of the two-day Parliament-Government dialogue on land governance that started at the National Assembly yesterday, November 15, 2022 on the theme, “Large-scale land concessions in Cameroon: Assessment and prospects in a context of reform.”
The main objective of the dialogue whose opening ceremony was presided at by the Senior Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Hilarion Etong on behalf of the House Speaker, Hon. Cavaye Yeguie Djibril is to take stock and reflect on the prospects for the allocation and management of land concessions, and the cohabitation of concessionaires with communities, so as to limit conflicts and promote respect for their rights.  The dialogue session is intended to help generate a position of Parliamentarians on a better management model in the context of the ongoing land reform. The reform is being drafted within the context of emerging concerns that the allocation of agricultural concessions to private investors is at the detriment of the land rights of local populations. During the session, focus is assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the current mechanisms for the allocation and management of land concessions in Cameroon with a view of obtaining a position from Parliamentarians on the best management model.
