Cancer Care : Chantal Biya, Jill Biden Share Ideas

This was during the U.S-Africa Leaders Summit Spousal Programme hosted by the First Lady of the United States, yesterday December 14, 2022 in Washington D.C.

Within the spousal programme as part of the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit, the First Lady of Cameroon, Chantal Biya joined a cancer talk with over 20 spouses and representatives from the private sector and international organisations, attending the second edition of the Summit in Washington, D.C. Hosting the first ladies yesterday December 14, 2022, was the First Lady of the United States (US), Jill Biden. They all gathered at the REACH, at the Kennedy Centre for Performing Arts to share ideas on breaking down barriers around cancer prevention, early detection, and care for women and girls around the world. It was an opportunity for African First Ladies to get advanced scientific research updates and progress made in cancer care in developed countries.
In her keynote address, Mrs Jill Biden said the event was in support of Biden Administration’s Cancer Moonshot. She revealed that in February 2022, United States President, Joe Biden launched the reignited cancer Moonshot, setting a lofty goal of decreasing cancer deaths by at least 50 per cent in the next 25 years and improving the experience of those living with and surviving cancer. This ambitious initiative in collaboration with several others, seeks to end cancer. Following that, the Lancet Oncology Commission (LOC) report for Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) was also launched, highlighting a growing cancer crisis in SSA with a projected increase from 520,348 deaths in 2020 to about one million deaths per year by 2030.
