Deceptions : Astonishing Exit Of Favourites

Even though exceptional performances were registered during the competition, the dismal show of some great names leaves many wondering what went wrong.

The World Cup has come and gone with the crowning of Argentina as the winners. They will keep the title for the next four years. Even though exceptional performances and beautiful games were witnessed during the competition, the shameful ousting of some teams that were considered favourites continues to linger in the minds of football lovers. 
For the second consecutive time, Germany was eliminated at the group stages. It was unbelievable given Germany’s potentials in world football. Having disappointed at the last World Cup and at Euro 2020, Germany were determined to improve in Qatar. With younger talent such as Kai Havertz and Jamal Musiala ready to take over from the old guard that won the World Cup in 2014, they looked strong enough on paper to at least reach the knockout phase. A shock defeat at the hands of the Blue Samurai left Germany reeling and while they were able to draw with Spain, failure to win either of their first two games meant the win over Costa Rica was not enough to help them continue. 
Belgium is another disappointment of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Roberto Martinez's side, finished third during the World Cup in Russia in 2018 but they produced another lackluster display at the World Cup in Qatar. Belgium’s star striker, Romelu Lukaku was unable to take his team to the next round. As a result, Belgium finished third in Group F and could not progress in the competition. Sad spectacle o...
