Beyond Victories!

Militants and supporters of the ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM) will use the party’s 38th anniversary today, March 24, 2023 to celebrate its overwhelming victory in the March 12, 2023 election of Senators counting for the third legislative period of the Upper House of Parliament, the Senate.
Since the reintroduction of multiparty politics in Cameroon in 1990, the CPDM has won all the multiparty elections starting from the March 1992 election of Members of the National Assembly in which the party won relative majority and had to create parliamentary alliances with some opposition political parties.  The CPDM’s victory in the March 2023 election of Senators has once more come to reaffirm the party’s leadership position in the country’s political landscape.
After the victory, the party now has to squarely face its future challenges considering that all has not been a bed of roses for it. The Secretary General of the CPDM Central Committee, Jean Nkuete who doubled as the Chairperson of the Central Supervisory Committee for the Operation to renew the executives of the basic organs of the party and its specialized organizations that lasted from August 7 to September 30, 2021 disclosed some cracks as scars of the operation. The operation culminated in the holding of the Disciplinary Committee to handle some teething isolated and reprehensible outbursts and other acts of indiscipline. Various sanctions were meted out on those found guilty. The challenge in this case remains that of ensuring the unity and cohesion of the party.  The seriousness of the issue is buttressed by the instructions Jean Nkuete gave to newly elected CPDM Section Presidents to “immediately get to work in the spirit of unity and cohesion in order to dispel the misunderstanding that arose during the election and to rebuild the indispensable synergy of action around the ideals of the party. “
