AFBC Elite Championships : Cameroon Grabs 12 Medals

The national men’s and women’s teams won two gold, two silver and eight bronze in the competition that ended on August 5, 2023.


The 20th edition of the AFBC Elite Boxing Championships ended at the Yaounde Multipurpose Sport Complex on Saturday August 5, 2023. Organised by the African Boxing Confederation, the competition brought together boxers from 27 countries on the continent. The competition that lasted for ten days was an opportunity for African boxers to showcase their talents to the world. A total of 24 bouts were programmed for the finals with four Cameroonian boxers on the ring. Out of four finals, Cameroon won two. 
In the women’s 52kg Fly weight division, Ngoune Reine Laure beat Nyembo Muamba Gisle on points. In the men’s +92kg super heavy weight division, Zacharie Serge Mvogo Amougou overpowered Agnes Keddy Evans from Seychelles by knockout, giving Cameroon its second gold medal. In the other two fights, Wouang Martial lost the 48kg minimum division bout. The defeat was highly contested by Cameroonian boxing technical bench and fans. In the women’s +81kg heavy weight division, Onguene Tsimi Marie Victorine lost her fight through the decision of the referee. Cameroon finished on the fourth spot with 12 medals; two gold, two silver and eight bronze. 
At the end of the competition, Morocco topped the medal table winning a total of 13 medals; eight gold, two silver and three bronze. The Democratic Republic of Congo was second with 15 medals; five gold, six silver and three bronze and Algeria was third wining seven medals; four gold, two silver and one bronze.
