Race of Hope: Alpinists Round Off Preparations

The 2017 edition of the Mount Cameroon Race of Hope will take place tomorrow February 25.

The town of Buea, at the foot of Mount Fako in the South West Region, will once more be on the limelight this weekend. The 2017 edition of the Mount Cameroon Race of Hope will take place tomorrow February 25.
Some 600 athletes from Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Kenya, France, Nigeria and Great Britain will be daring the chariots of the gods. Organisers are leaving no stone unturned to ensure a hitch-free competition. Echoes from Buea say all is set for the event. Everything is in place and certain major technical aspects have been taken care of such as the selection of athletes, hostesses, clearing of the mountain track and the field is ready.
Meanwhile, alpinists are rounding off their final preparations in order to be on top form come tomorrow. All the athletes arrived in Buea at least two days before the race to get used to the environment. A few days before the competition Buea and the surrounding towns have been booming with activities. Sports and cultural events are organised around the Molyko stadium to give the event the pump and pageantry it deserves. It will be an opportunity for tourists to discover Mount Cameroon and the culture of the South West Region.     
The athletes will compete in various categories namely seniors, ladies and gentlemen veterans. The departure and arrival points will be inside the Molyko Stadium. The competition attracts compatriots and spectators from around the globe. The athletes compete for the first place to the summit and back again. Each athlete will be out to write his name in the legendary book of champions like Simplice Ndungeh, Sarah Etonge, Ngwaya Yvonne and Esuka Reginald Wose, among others. Since its creation in 1973 only local athletes have dominated the competition. Foreign athletes are yet to break the myth. Mount Cameroon Race of Hope is an endurance race of about 40 km with 2500 m of difference in height which is particularly difficult and physically demanding.

Comment va se dérouler la course sans Guinness comme sponsor cette année ?

Guinness, après son retour, a tenu trois ans. Et durant cette période, la compétition s’est déroulée avec le concours d’autres sponsors. De nombreuses entreprises citoyennes savent que c’est une compétition qui revêt une importance capitale pour notre pays. Donc, cette absence n’est pas un problème en tant que tel. Certes, Guinness apportait un plus avec l’augmentation de la prime des vainqueurs, passée de 3 à 10 millions de F. Cette prime ne sera pas supprimée parce que le principal sponsor n’est plus là. Au contraire. C’est une prime qui est désormais parrainée par le chef de l’Etat. Le plus important est que l’événement puisse se tenir et qu’il soit bien organisé pour rehausser l’image de notre pays. Et pour cela, nous n’allons lésiner sur aucun moyen. Nous avons commencé à préparer la compétition depuis plus de trois mois déjà, et nous avons préfinancé plusieurs secteurs de préparation.
