Fighting HIV/AIDS : Cameroon, US Gov’t Discuss Partnership

External Relations Minister, Mbella Mbella and the Coordinator of the US government activities to combat the disease, Dr. John Nkengasong exchanged views on September 6, 2023.

Health cooperation occupies centre stage in the bilateral relations between Cameroon and the United States. The US government through several programmes supports Cameroon in the fight against tropical diseases and the spread of viruses. Amongst the diseases both parties constantly grapple to contain, is HIV/AIDS. It is within this context that the Minister of External Relations, Mbella Mbella, on September 6, 2023 granted an audience to the US Ambassador-at-Large, Coordinator of the United States Government Activities to Combat HIV/AIDS Globally, Dr. John Nkengasong. Accompanied by the United States Ambassador to Cameroon, Christopher John Lamora, the personalities discussed partnership with the United States government in a common effort to fight HIV/AIDS and bring it to an end as a public health threat by 2030.
The Cameroonian-born Virologist who was confirmed to the position by the US Senate on May 5, 2022 is in Cameroon to meet various stakeholders involved in implementing the programme on the fight against HIV/AIDS.  
Besides discussing partnership, Dr. John Nkengasong lauded efforts already made by Cameroon in bringing the spread of the virus to bay. “Cameroon has made a lot of progress in the fight against HIV/AIDS. We believe that together, we can end HIV/AIDS as a public health threat by 2030, but we need to sustain that response going forward. HIV/AIDS is not over.
