West, Central Africa : Youth Develop National Peace, Security Action Plans

The Cameroonian Minister of Youth Affairs and Civic Education, Mounouna Foutsou, closed the workshop in Yaounde on Thursday, October 19, 2023. He commended the United Nations Population Fund, UNFPA for its great concern for peace and stability in West and Central Africa. Adding that no meaningful peace and security can be achieved without the strong involvement of young people.

Cameroon Commended
The Resident Representative of UNFPA Cameroon, Dr Justin Koffi, expressed deep appreciation to the Cameroonian government for hosting and lending its full support to the successful Regional Training of Trainers Workshop On National Framework On Youth, Peace and Security, YPS For West And Central Africa.
The four-day training ran from October 16-19, 2023. It was attended by representatives from 11 countries in West and Central Africa. Who sought to develop and implement national Youth, Peace and Security action plans for their respective countries.

Great Facilitation
The United Nations Population Fund and the Government of Cameroon, through the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Civic Education, MINJEC, hosted and co-chaired the workshop. Some 30 experts from UNFPA, the United Nations Development Programme, UNDP; government representatives, youth activists and civil society organizations from 11 West and Central African countries were trained on developing, implementing and monitoring Youth, Peace and Security National Action Plans, NAPs.

Workshop Aims
The workshop strengthened trainers' ability to engage and empower diverse youth groups in peace-building and conflict prevention efforts. Equipped them with advocacy skills towards garnering national commitment to developing and implementing NAPs. And established a network of trainers who can support each other, exchange best practices, and collaborate in different countries’ NAPs.

United Nations Resolutions  
The United Nations Security Council successively adopted three resolutions - 2250 in 2015; 2419 in 2018 and 2535 in 2020 - which constitute the backbone of the YPS Agenda. These resolutions acknowledge young people as positive forces in the prevention and resolution of conflicts.

Youth Security Agenda
UNFPA, whose mandate is delivering a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every child birth is safe and the potential of every young person is fulfilled, supports Member States in implementing this important Agenda. The YPS Agenda correlates with the African Youth Charter and Agenda 2063 of the African Union. The African Union developed a continental framework for the YPS Agenda as well as a 10-year implementation plan.
